WARM SPACES FUNDING INTRODUCED

The Manx Lottery Trust has been allocated distribution duties for a new funding initiative, to help keep community spaces warm this winter.

As announced by Chief Minister, Alfred Cannan, in Tynwald yesterday, financial support will be offered to owners of shared spaces, as the cold weather approaches and energy bills increase.

From 1 October 2022 until 31 March 2023 bill payers of community facilities can apply for grants to assist with the rising cost of heating, or increasing energy efficiency through upgrading a building’s insulation, heat supply, or amenities.

Such spaces might include village halls, club headquarters, churches, and community hubs, where clubs and societies may wish to provide a warm, community space to gather, serve hot refreshments, or give local residents access to warm items.

Minister for the Cabinet Office, Kate Lord-Brennan said: ‘Our community spaces could provide vital support for vulnerable members of our community this winter, particularly those who live alone or face fuel poverty. If your voluntary or community organisation, club or society uses a space which will need warming over the coming months, encourage the energy bill payer to apply for assistance.’

Chairman of the Manx Lottery Trust, Sarah Kelly, said: ‘Our hope is that this fund empowers communities to support themselves and each other, by providing warm spaces and provisions to make sure no one is left alone in the cold during these difficult times.’

As ever, certain criteria determine eligibility; support cannot be sought for one-off events, and owners or bill payers only may apply. Grants awarded will be awarded between £300-£2,500, with the maximum amount being intended for applicants with multiple spaces to heat over the winter period.
